Create and review questions with AI¶
Designer can turn source material into editable question drafts without leaving the current paper. It never inserts or publishes AI output automatically: an authorized author reviews every candidate and chooses what enters the paper.
What your plan includes and what extra questions cost¶
Source-backed AI question authoring is included in every plan. Your monthly allowance counts valid, source-backed, non-duplicate candidates that reach Review—not requests, uploaded pages, or provider retries.
| Plan | Source-backed questions per month | Source library storage | Saved sources | Maximum file size |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | 10 | 250 MB | 25 | 50 MB |
| Basic | 100 | 2 GB | 250 | 250 MB |
| Professional | 500 | 10 GB | 1,000 | 500 MB |
| Flexible | 100 | 5 GB | 500 | 500 MB |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom | Custom | Custom |
The included allowance resets at the start of each UTC calendar month and is shared by the organization. The current allowance is shown in the AI authoring window. A text-only question or a question that reuses an image from the source uses one included question. A question with a newly generated visual uses four included questions. For example, an allowance of 100 can produce up to 100 text or source-image questions, up to 25 newly generated-visual questions, or a mixture of both.
After the included allowance is used, the current price for each additional valid question reaching Review is:
| Output reaching Review | USD | CAD | NGN |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text-only or source-image question | $0.15 | C$0.20 | ₦200 |
| Question with a newly generated visual | $0.60 | C$0.80 | ₦800 |
There is no separate AI-credit product or AI wallet. The price is reserved and deducted from your organization's normal prepaid balance. Every plan can add funds from Billing → Prepaid Balance using the available payment provider. The AI window shows the applicable price and available prepaid balance before you generate. If the balance cannot cover the part of the request beyond your allowance, generation does not start and tells you how much to add.
For example, if two included questions remain and you request five, Designer reserves the price of three questions. If four valid candidates reach Review, the two included questions count first, only two prepaid questions are charged, and the unused one-question reservation is returned to the prepaid balance.
Only valid, source-backed candidates reaching Review count
Failed requests, invalid candidates, candidates without verifiable source evidence, and duplicates rejected before Review do not use the allowance or prepaid balance.
Supported sources¶
You can generate from the current passage or case study, select up to 10 saved organization resources, or upload any of these file types:
- PDF (
.pdf) - Microsoft Word (
.docx) - Microsoft PowerPoint (
.pptx) - plain UTF-8 text (
.txt) - Markdown (
.mdor.markdown) - HTML (
.htmlor.htm) - PNG, JPEG, GIF, or WebP images
PDF sources should contain selectable text. Run OCR before uploading a scanned or image-only PDF. Macro-enabled and encrypted Office files are not supported. Designer reads HTML as inert text: it does not run scripts, submit forms, load embedded objects, or fetch remote resources.
Uploaded resources stay in your organization's private source library until a user deletes them. Uploading the same file again reuses the existing resource instead of storing another copy.
Generate question candidates¶
- Open an exam project and select the paper that should receive the questions.
- Choose Author questions from your sources in the Exam Explorer toolbar.
- On Source, choose the current passage, select saved resources, or upload a supported file. Wait until every selected resource is ready.
- On Questions, add one or more blueprint rows.
- For each row, choose an exact count, question type, difficulty, marks, and optional topic or learning outcome.
- Choose Generate candidates.
Designer supports these generated question types:
- Multiple Choice — single select
- Multiple Choice — multiple select
- Fill in the Blank
Large sources use a focused selection of original source sections rather than an AI summary. To keep book-scale requests economical, Designer requires at least three requested questions when selected sources contain 100,000–499,999 estimated tokens, and at least five at 500,000 tokens or more. Shorter sources can generate one question.
Review before inserting¶
On Review, check and edit each candidate's:
- question text;
- answer choices or accepted fill-in answers;
- correct-answer selection;
- explanation;
- difficulty and marks; and
- source citation.
Clear Accept or choose Discard for any candidate you do not want. Choose Insert selected only after the remaining questions are ready for normal Designer editing and preview.
Important
AI output can be incomplete, ambiguous, or incorrect even when it cites a source. A subject-matter expert should verify the wording, answer key, explanation, difficulty, accessibility, and score before delivery.
Evidence and duplicate checks¶
Candidates must cite text found at the stated PDF page, Word section, PowerPoint slide, text line range, Markdown heading, or HTML heading before they can reach Review.
Duplicate detection compares candidates with:
- other candidates in the current generation; and
- questions already in the currently open paper.
Designer deliberately does not compare questions in other papers, exams, or organization content.
If generation does not complete¶
- Confirm the file is a supported type and contains enough readable text.
- For text, Markdown, and HTML, save the file as UTF-8.
- For PDF, run OCR if you cannot select and copy its text.
- Confirm that the requested question count meets the large-source minimum.
- Select fewer or more focused sources and try again.
- Check the organization's remaining included allowance and prepaid balance.
- If the allowance is exhausted, open Billing → Prepaid Balance and add at least the shortfall shown in the AI authoring window.
After insertion, use the normal question preview and quality check before saving and exporting the project.
Create questions that use visuals¶
When a selected source contains a supported image, each blueprint row offers these visual choices:
| Choice | What Designer does | Included-question usage |
|---|---|---|
| No visual | Generates a text-only question. | 1 |
| Reuse source image | Uses a relevant image extracted from the cited source location. | 1 |
| Generate new visual | Creates a distinct 1K visual that tests a similar concept. | 4 |
| Auto | Chooses text, source reuse, or a new visual according to the source and returns unused reserved questions after settlement. | 1 or 4 |
A visual question must cite readable source text from the same PDF page, PowerPoint slide, document section, or other source location as its reference image. Designer avoids cover art, logos, decorative images, and unrelated front matter. Newly generated visuals retain their source, model, and job lineage and remain pending human review.
Before inserting a visual candidate, check that the image is relevant, does not reveal the answer, and has accurate alternative text and a useful long description. A failed or rejected image does not use the organization's allowance or prepaid balance.
